Also, customers can request the jeweller to get a piece of silver they are buying hallmarked. But this has to be done while making the purchase. The jeweller will have to take the silver jewellery to the nearest assaying centre to get it hallmarked. If the jewellery meets the quality standards, it will be hallmarked according to the BIS regulations. Hallmarking Department of BIS, in an email response said that a hallmarked silver jewellery should have the following signs:

a) BIS mark along with the word ‘SILVER’

b) Purity grade/Fineness of silver

c) Assaying centre’s identification mark

d) Jeweller’s mark/manufacturer’s identification mark
