It is important for all bank customers to be informed of the dates of the January 2023 bank holidays so they may schedule their bank work accordingly. Bank holidays will differ from state to state.

Republic Day, which is on January 26 this year, is the only national holiday when banks will be closed (Thursday). However, a select few towns, like Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata and Srinagar do not observe a bank holiday on January 26.

Additionally, there are a number of state-specific bank holidays in January 2023.

Here is a look at bank holidays in January 2022 across states:

  • January 2 ( Monday) New Year’s Celebration: Banks will be closed in Mizoram.
  • January 3 (Tuesday), Imoinu Iratpa: Banks closed in Manipur.
  • January 4 (Wednesday); Banks closed in Manipur
  • January 26 (Thursday); Banks closed in all states except Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakand and Srinagar.

All bank holidays have been classified into distinct categories under the Negotiable Instruments Act of 1881-Holidays Under Negotiable Instruments Act, Banks’ Closing of Accounts, and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday.

Bank holidays 2023

The RBI publishes a list of bank holidays on its official website. The central bank announces the bank holidays for the full year state wise.
Bank customers are strongly urged to plan their bank-related work around all of these holidays to avoid confusion.

India observes three central holidays: Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), and Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti (2 October).
